Islam

According to the Qur’an, the sacred book of Islam, the one God of Abraham – who spoke to Moses and Jesus – gave the final revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (May peace and blessings be upon him), an Arab orphan born in Mecca in the 7th century.  The revelations to Muhammad (May peace and blessings be upon him) came to him from God through the angel Gabriel over many years.  Muslims believe that there is only one God, called “Allah” in Arabic.  The world “Islam” means “surrender/” a Muslim is one who has surrendered his will to God. That surrender is shown through Five Pillars of Faith:  reciting words of faith (Shahada), praying five times a day (Salâh), fasting during the month of Ramadan (Sawm), helping the poor (Zakat), and making a pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj).  By  repenting and purifying themselves, Muslims attain paradise after death.  Nearly a third of all Muslims live in North Africa and the Middle East, but the majority live in central and southern Asia.
